Thomas Ballantyne, the founder of Black Creek Cheese Factory had this Queen Anne house constructed in 1892. This extra wide bay and gable red brick facade has a delicately embellished entrance porch in the geometric Eastlake style. The repetition of the 3 second level windows create a nice balance to the sunburst in the gable and the Romanesque half round windows. Ultimately charming and worth noting is the decorative brickwork throughout.

I was wondering if you know anything about the raised brick patterns found throughout the facade? I noticed the pattern on several houses in Stratford during a heritage homes tour. Some of the square brick patterns are placed randomly while others seem to have some symmetry.

I have noticed these patterns on houses in other areas as well, but they do seem to have a "regionalism" to them. I will try to post some photos of others I have seen. One more example of builders knowing what worked well being lost in more current houses.

We live in Thomas Ballantyne Jr.'s next house on 175 Cambria Street. He had this home built in his later years: 1921. We are just getting a plaque for this unique home from ACO and were interested to learn that he was a "cheese buyer" as I thought he was an industrialist.

Hi Susan, Your house is charming and definitely distinctive with its arts and crafts influence. It seems Thomas Ballantyne was both a cheese dealer and an industrialist: http://bit.ly/1ZLYrTB. Impressive history!
